AI4K is one of the latest programmes launched by AISG recently to develop local AI talent. Aimed at upper primary school children aged 10 – 12 years old, the curriculum, which has been designed in partnership with NUS High School of Math and Science, helps the children understand machine learning concepts as well as guide them in developing solutions via Scratch and popular machine learning tools for a relatable problem they face in their daily lives.
An inaugural AI4K Boot Camp was conducted for over 60 Primary 5/6 school children on 2 February, 2019.
Collaboration with Facebook
AISG is pleased to announce that Facebook will support our AI4K programme to scale nation-wide, starting in June with a pilot for 120 children. To develop future talent in coding, what Senior Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam called “basic language of the future,” this pilot will explore a new model: training up to 10 mid-career professionals and retirees to serve as facilitators to run the programme, under the guidance of a lead trainer. The pilot workshops in June will be held at various public libraries in Singapore.
“Facebook is committed to having a positive impact in the community as we develop the infrastructure of the future in Singapore. We are excited to partner with AI Singapore to cultivate future tech talent and intergenerational learning”
Making the AI4K programme bigger…
AISG intends to reach 10,000 school children by the end of 2022. To achieve this, we will start with a core team of lead trainers. The core team will maintain AI4K’s programme and refresh the curriculum to keep pace with technological trends and national education priorities. The team will later recruit and train a larger group of mid-career professionals and retirees as AI Facilitators to deliver regular AI4K sessions at community centres and public venues. To ensure consistent quality and output, the relevant facilitators will be upskilled in pedagogical foundation and facilitation skills. AISG plans to work with relevant government agencies to identify suitable candidates.
The application to be an AI Facilitator for the June AI4K pilot programme will start from 2 – 8 May. Successful applicants will be provided training on basic AI concepts and technical skills as well as relevant training on classroom management. Training will take place during the last 2 weeks of May and the AI4K Boot Camps will be conducted between mid-end June.
