AI has the potential to transform how healthcare is delivered. In a 2019 Future Health Index survey by Philips, Singapore came in third in the use of AI in healthcare, where most AI applications are used to improve clinical diagnostic accuracy.
In June 2018, AI Singapore launched our inaugural AI in Health Grand Challenge to encourage research and development into innovative AI technologies to enhance primary care in health promotion and disease management, which is now well under way.
Collaborating across boundaries
To further improve and advance our AI capabilities within the healthcare context, Singapore needs to stay abreast of AI technologies used to tackle various healthcare challenges in the global environment.
To do so, AI Singapore is actively participating in the ITU/WHO Focus Group on Artificial Intelligence for Health (FG-AI4H), set up by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO). This Focus Group gathers global experts from both the AI and medical domains, to establish guidelines and standardised assessment frameworks for the evaluation of AI-based methods for health, diagnosis, triage or treatment decisions.
With the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, this has also become an important platform for researchers to join forces in harnessing AI to tackle the threat of the coronavirus.
At the 7th FG AI4H Workshop held last November in New Delhi, AI Singapore, together with other experts, participated in a panel session and shared our perspectives and progress of the AI adoption and ethics in the local healthcare context.
AI Singapore is now contributing as editor to one of a series of FG-AI4H deliverables that addresses best practices for AI model training in the healthcare context.
Later this year, AI Singapore plans to host an upcoming Focus Group Meeting, where we will be organizing a series of workshops and technical meetings to bring together global experts with the local research community to advance AI in healthcare!
